The pressure-treated 4-by-4 posts that support a porch roof are functional, but they don't add much to the looks of the porch. The posts have more than enough strength to support the roof, but the 3 1/2-inch width appears too small. Decorative cladding makes the posts look wider and thicker. Matching trim pieces made from the same lumber at the top and bottom make the posts look more like columns.
